Can I Fertilize in the Rain?
Fertilizing during active rain is generally not recommended. Light drizzle may be acceptable for granular products, but rain makes it difficult to apply fertilizer evenly since wet grass causes granules to clump and stick to blades rather than reaching the soil. Liquid fertilizers should never be applied during rain because the product washes off immediately. While the idea of letting rain water in your fertilizer sounds efficient, applying fertilizer during active rainfall creates several practical and environmental problems that outweigh any convenience.
The most immediate issue is application quality. Granular fertilizer is designed to be spread evenly across dry turf. When grass is wet from rain, the granules stick to leaf blades in random clumps rather than falling evenly to the soil surface. This creates concentrated patches of fertilizer that can burn the grass in those spots while leaving other areas unfertilized. Your spreader also performs poorly in wet conditions, as damp granules clump together and clog the distribution mechanism.
Liquid fertilizer is even more problematic in the rain. These products rely on a defined contact time with leaf surfaces for foliar absorption. Active rainfall immediately dilutes and washes the product off the leaves, rendering the application largely ineffective. You are essentially pouring your fertilizer directly into the storm drain.
From an environmental perspective, fertilizing during rain significantly increases the risk of nutrient runoff. Rainwater that cannot infiltrate the soil quickly enough flows across the surface, carrying dissolved fertilizer nutrients directly into storm drains, streams, and lakes. Nitrogen and phosphorus from lawn fertilizer are major contributors to water pollution and harmful algal blooms in freshwater and coastal ecosystems.
There is one narrow exception where light drizzle might be acceptable. If you are applying granular fertilizer and a very light mist or drizzle begins during your application, you can continue as long as the grass is not visibly wet and the granules are still flowing freely through your spreader. However, this is a judgment call, and it is almost always better to wait.
The preferred approach is to apply fertilizer to dry grass with rain expected in the near future but not currently falling. This gives you clean, even application with the benefit of natural watering to follow.
If you absolutely must work around a rainy day, here is a practical strategy. Check the hourly forecast for a dry window. Most rainy days have periods of lighter activity between bands of heavier rain. Apply your granular fertilizer during a dry window of at least one to two hours. This gives you time to spread the product evenly and allows granules to settle into the turf canopy before the next rain band arrives.
Another alternative is to use a drop spreader instead of a broadcast spreader in damp conditions. Drop spreaders place granules directly below the hopper in a defined strip, which is more precise than a broadcast pattern and less affected by moisture on the grass.
For those on a tight schedule with persistent rain in the forecast, consider postponing your fertilizer application by a week. Lawn fertilizer timing windows are not so narrow that a one-week delay will significantly impact results. A properly timed, evenly applied treatment will always outperform a rushed application in poor conditions.
In summary, wait for dry conditions to fertilize. The combination of uneven distribution, reduced effectiveness, and environmental runoff risk makes fertilizing in the rain a practice that wastes money and potentially harms your lawn and local waterways.
