Granular synthetic fertilizers almost always still work regardless of age. The primary nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, are mineral salts that are chemically stable under normal storage conditions. A bag of 10-10-10 from a decade ago still contains 10 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphorus pentoxide, and 10 percent potassium oxide by weight. The chemistry does not change sitting in a bag. This makes synthetic granular fertilizer remarkably shelf-stable, retaining full nutrient potency for 5-10 years in dry storage because synthetic salts do not decompose or degrade.
The main issue with old granular fertilizer is physical condition rather than chemical potency. Exposure to humidity or moisture causes granules to absorb water, dissolve partially, and then re-crystallize into hard clumps or a solid mass. While the nutrients are still present, clumped fertilizer cannot be spread evenly through a broadcast or drop spreader. Uneven application leads to streaky results with some areas getting too much and others too little.
To use clumped fertilizer, break it apart by placing the bag on a hard surface and striking it with a rubber mallet or rolling over it with a heavy object. For badly caked product, you may need to break it into chunks and dissolve them in water for use as a liquid application. Alternatively, break clumps by hand and apply around individual plants rather than trying to run damaged granules through a spreader.
Old slow-release fertilizers may still contain all their nutrients, but the coating technology can degrade. Polymer and sulfur coatings that control nutrient release may crack or deteriorate during storage, especially if exposed to temperature extremes. The practical effect is that old slow-release fertilizer may release nutrients faster than intended, behaving more like a quick-release product. Old liquid fertilizers require a visual and physical inspection before use. Shake the container thoroughly and check whether the product mixes back into a uniform solution.
