Grass plants grow from a structure called the crown, located at the soil surface where the roots meet the shoots. As long as the crown remains alive, the grass can produce new leaves even if all existing leaf blades are completely burned and brown. The crown is somewhat protected because it sits at or just below the soil surface, where salt concentrations may be lower than on the exposed leaf tissue above.
Mild fertilizer burn damages only the upper portions of leaf blades. You will see browning at the tips that may extend partway down the blade, but the lower portion of each leaf and the crown remain green and viable. This type of damage typically recovers within one to two weeks once the excess salts are flushed from the soil. Mowing removes the damaged tips and new growth quickly fills in.
Moderate burn affects entire leaf blades, turning them completely brown or straw-colored. However, if you gently pull on the browned grass and it resists, the crown is still alive and anchored by living roots. This indicates recovery is likely, though it will take longer, typically two to four weeks. New blades will emerge from the crown as the plant regenerates. Keep the soil consistently moist during recovery and resist the urge to fertilize.
Severe burn kills the crown and roots. When you tug on brown grass and it pulls out easily with no resistance, or the crown appears mushy and dark when examined, the plant is dead and will not recover. These areas will remain bare and require reseeding or resodding after the soil has been thoroughly flushed and tested.
The grass species also influences recovery potential. Warm-season grasses with aggressive spreading growth habits, like Bermuda grass, recover more quickly and completely from burn damage because they spread via stolons and rhizomes from healthy surrounding areas into damaged patches. A moderate burn on a Bermuda lawn may fill in completely within three to four weeks from lateral spread alone, without any reseeding.
Cool-season bunch-type grasses like tall fescue and perennial ryegrass do not spread laterally and must regenerate exclusively from surviving crowns. If the crowns in a patch are dead, the bare area will not fill in from surrounding grass and must be reseeded. Kentucky bluegrass is the exception among cool-season grasses because it produces rhizomes that can colonize damaged areas from healthy margins, though this process is slower than warm-season grass recovery.

Plants with intact root systems and undamaged growing points, whether at the crown, along stems, or at branch tips, can regenerate new foliage after burn damage. Annual plants with shallow roots are less likely to recover than deep-rooted perennials, shrubs, and trees that can access moisture below the salt-affected zone.
