How Long After Fertilizing Can I Water?

Granular Fertilizer: Water Immediately

Water granular fertilizer within 24 hours of application. Ideally, water right after spreading. The granules need moisture to dissolve and release nutrients into the soil. Left dry on grass blades for more than 24-48 hours, granular fertilizer pulls moisture from the leaf tissue and causes chemical burns: yellow or brown spots exactly where granules sat.

Apply about a quarter inch of water, enough to dissolve the granules without creating puddles or runoff. A light, 15-20 minute sprinkler session works for most soils. Heavy clay soils need slower watering to avoid pooling.

Liquid Fertilizer: Wait 2-4 Hours

Liquid fertilizer needs time to absorb through leaf surfaces before you wash it off. Wait at least 2-4 hours after application. If rain is forecast within that window, postpone the application. Foliar-fed nutrients absorb through stomata (the pores on leaf undersides), and water dilutes the solution before absorption finishes.

Slow-Release Fertilizer: Less Urgent

Coated slow-release products like Osmocote or Milorganite can wait 24-48 hours before watering. The coating controls nutrient release regardless of water timing. That said, watering sooner still helps work the granules into the soil surface and away from foot traffic.

What Happens If You Wait Too Long

Leaving granular fertilizer on dry grass for 2+ days in summer heat almost guarantees burn marks. The salt concentration dehydrates grass blades on contact. Recovery takes 2-4 weeks if the crowns survive, but severe burns kill the grass entirely and require overseeding.

Best Watering Practice After Fertilizing

Water in the early morning when evaporation is lowest. Avoid watering at night since wet grass overnight promotes fungal disease. Run sprinklers long enough to deliver 0.25 inches of water. Place a tuna can on the lawn to measure the depth while your sprinkler runs.
