How to Calculate Fertilizer Application Rate

To apply 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft using 10-10-10: divide 1 by 0.10 = 10 lbs of product needed. Formula: desired nutrient lbs ÷ (nutrient percentage ÷ 100) = lbs of product needed. For area calculation: multiply length × width of your space, then divide by 1,000 to get the multiplier for your rate.

The fertilizer application rate formula is straightforward once you understand it. Step 1: Determine how much actual nutrient you need. Most recommendations state pounds of nutrient per 1,000 square feet (e.g., '1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft'). Step 2: Look at your fertilizer's NPK numbers. A 10-10-10 bag contains 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 10% potassium by weight. Step 3: Calculate product needed. Divide the desired nutrient amount by the percentage as a decimal. Example: 1 lb N ÷ 0.10 = 10 lbs of 10-10-10 per 1,000 sq ft. With 46-0-0 urea: 1 lb N ÷ 0.46 = 2.17 lbs of urea per 1,000 sq ft. Step 4: Scale for your area. If your lawn is 5,000 sq ft: 10 lbs × 5 = 50 lbs of 10-10-10 needed. This same formula works for any fertilizer and any nutrient.
