Uneven fertilizer application causes striping : alternating dark green and light green bands that reveal exactly where you walked. The two-pass method eliminates this problem. Step 1: Set your spreader to HALF the bag-recommended setting. Step 2: Make your first set of passes walking north to south (or whatever direction feels natural), overlapping wheel tracks slightly. Step 3: Make a second set of passes walking east to west (perpendicular to the first). The two half-rate passes create uniform coverage that no single pass can match. Critical technique tips: always close the hopper when turning at row ends to prevent double-application at turn points. Walk at a consistent speed : rushing causes thin spots, slowing causes heavy spots. Broadcast spreaders cover larger areas faster but are less precise at edges. Drop spreaders are slower but apply product only directly below the hopper : better for edging along sidewalks and beds. Calibrate annually: mark off a 100 sq ft area, apply at your normal rate, weigh what was applied, and compare to the target rate.
