Signs of over-fertilization include yellowing or browning leaf tips and margins, a white salt crust on the soil surface, rapid but weak and leggy growth, wilting despite adequate water, leaf drop, root damage visible as brown or black roots, and reduced flowering or fruiting. On lawns, look for brown streaks matching spreader patterns, dark green strips alternating with burned areas, and excessive thatch buildup from overstimulated growth. Symptoms typically appear within two to seven days after application.

Recognizing the signs of over-fertilization early gives you the best chance of saving affected plants. The symptoms can mimic other problems like drought, disease, or nutrient deficiency, so understanding the specific indicators of fertilizer excess helps with accurate diagnosis.

The most recognizable sign on lawns is a pattern of damage that matches your application pattern. Brown streaks following the path of a drop spreader, darker green strips from overlapping broadcast spreader passes, or a concentrated dead spot where fertilizer was spilled are unmistakable indicators. These geometric patterns distinguish fertilizer burn from disease or insect damage, which typically create irregular or circular patches.

Leaf tip and margin burn is the earliest symptom on both turf and garden plants. The tips and edges of leaves turn yellow, then brown and crispy, while the center of the leaf may remain green initially. This pattern occurs because excess salts concentrate at the points where water evaporates from the leaf, burning those tissues first. On grass blades, this appears as browning that starts at the tip and progresses downward toward the crown.

A white, crusty residue on the soil surface is a telltale sign of salt accumulation from over-fertilization. This crust forms as water evaporates from the soil surface, leaving behind concentrated mineral salts. It is most visible in potted plants, raised beds, and garden areas with exposed soil. The crust can also appear on the outside of clay pots as white mineral deposits leaching through the porous material.

Wilting despite adequate soil moisture is a paradoxical symptom that confuses many gardeners. When soil salt levels are too high, roots cannot absorb water even when it is present, because the osmotic gradient has reversed. The plant wilts just as it would in drought, leading gardeners to add more water, which can compound problems by washing salts deeper into the root zone or creating waterlogged conditions.

Excessive vegetative growth is an often-overlooked sign of nitrogen over-application. Plants grow unusually tall and leggy with dark green foliage, but the tissue is soft, weak, and susceptible to wind damage. Lawn grass may grow much faster than normal, requiring mowing every few days. Vegetable plants may produce abundant foliage but few flowers or fruits, as excess nitrogen favors leafy growth at the expense of reproductive development.

Root damage from fertilizer burn is not directly visible without digging, but its effects are apparent. Plants with salt-damaged roots show general decline, poor new growth, increased susceptibility to drought and heat, and failure to recover after watering. If you dig carefully around an affected plant, damaged roots appear brown or black rather than white or light tan, and may feel mushy instead of firm.

In container plants and potted specimens, the signs appear faster and more severely because the limited soil volume concentrates fertilizer salts. Leaves may curl downward, develop brown or black spots, or drop prematurely. The potting mix may feel dry and crusty even after watering, because salt buildup repels water.

Excessive thatch buildup in lawns can indicate chronic over-fertilization over time. When grass is pushed to grow faster than soil organisms can decompose dead material, a thick layer of partially decomposed plant matter accumulates between the green grass and the soil surface. This thatch layer harbors insects and disease organisms and prevents water and nutrients from reaching the root zone.

If you identify these symptoms, stop all fertilizer applications immediately and begin a recovery protocol of deep, thorough watering to flush excess salts from the root zone. For container plants, run water through the pot until it drains freely from the bottom, repeating several times. For lawns and gardens, apply 1 to 2 inches of water daily for several days to dilute and leach accumulated salts.
