What Is Fertilizer?
Fertilizer is any natural or manufactured material added to soil or applied to plants to supply essential nutrients for growth. Plants need 17 nutrients in total, but the three most important, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), are supplied by most commercial fertilizers. The NPK ratio on the label shows the percentage of each. Fertilizers come in organic forms (compost, manure, bone meal) and synthetic forms (urea, ammonium nitrate, superphosphate).

Fertilizer is any substance that provides essential nutrients to plants to promote growth, flowering, fruiting, and overall health. While soil naturally contains nutrients, crops and garden plants deplete them over time. Fertilizer replenishes these nutrients so plants can continue to thrive.
Plants require 17 essential elements. Three come from air and water: carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The remaining 14 must come from the soil, and fertilizer supplies them when natural reserves are insufficient.
The three primary macronutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), collectively called NPK. Nitrogen fuels leaf and stem growth and gives plants their green color through chlorophyll production. Phosphorus supports root development, flowering, and seed formation. Potassium strengthens disease resistance, regulates water movement, and improves stress tolerance.
Secondary macronutrients include calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. Micronutrients needed in trace amounts include iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and nickel.
Fertilizers come in two broad categories. Organic fertilizers are derived from plant or animal matter: compost, manure, bone meal, blood meal, fish emulsion, and seaweed extract. They release nutrients slowly as soil organisms break them down and also improve soil structure and microbial activity. Synthetic fertilizers are manufactured chemically: urea, ammonium nitrate, superphosphate, and potassium chloride. They deliver nutrients immediately in precise ratios but do not improve soil biology.
Every fertilizer sold commercially must display three numbers on the label, the NPK ratio. A bag labeled 10-10-10 contains 10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus (as P2O5), and 10% potassium (as K2O) by weight. The remaining weight is filler material that helps distribute the nutrients evenly.
Fertilizers also come in different physical forms. Granular fertilizers are solid pellets spread on the soil surface. Liquid fertilizers are dissolved in water and applied with a watering can or sprayer. Slow-release fertilizers have coated granules that release nutrients gradually over weeks or months. Water-soluble fertilizers dissolve completely and provide immediate nutrient availability.
The right fertilizer depends on what your plants need, which is best determined by a soil test. Applying fertilizer without knowing your soil's nutrient levels is like taking medicine without a diagnosis.
