What Is Slow-Release Fertilizer?

Slow-release fertilizer is a type of fertilizer that releases nutrients gradually over an extended period, typically 6 to 16 weeks. Nutrients are delivered through polymer-coated granules, sulfur-coated urea, or natural organic materials that break down slowly in soil. This provides steady, consistent feeding that reduces the risk of fertilizer burn, minimizes nutrient runoff, and requires fewer applications compared to quick-release formulas. It is ideal for lawns and gardens where sustained nutrition matters.

Slow-release fertilizer, also called controlled-release or time-release fertilizer, delivers nutrients to plants gradually over weeks or months rather than all at once. This approach to plant nutrition offers significant advantages for both plant health and environmental protection.

Four distinct mechanisms achieve slow nutrient release. Understanding these helps gardeners choose the right product for their needs.

Polymer-coated fertilizers encase each granule in a thin plastic-like membrane with microscopic pores. Water penetrates the coating, dissolves the nutrients inside, and the nutrient solution slowly diffuses out through the pores. The rate of release is primarily controlled by soil temperature, with warmer temperatures producing faster release. This temperature responsiveness is actually beneficial because plant nutrient demand also increases with temperature.

Sulfur-coated urea (SCU) wraps urea granules in a sulfur shell. Soil microbes gradually break down the sulfur coating, releasing the urea inside. The sulfur itself provides a secondary nutrient benefit. However, SCU release can be somewhat unpredictable, with some granules releasing quickly if the coating is cracked or damaged.

Natural organic slow-release sources include materials like milorganite, composted manure, bone meal, and feather meal. These release nutrients as soil microorganisms decompose the organic material. The release rate depends on soil temperature, moisture, and microbial activity, making them truly responsive to growing conditions.

Methylene urea and ureaformaldehyde are synthetic organic nitrogen sources where urea molecules are chemically bonded together in chains of varying lengths. Short chains dissolve quickly, while longer chains require microbial activity to break them down, creating a phased release pattern.

The advantages of slow-release fertilizers are substantial. First, they significantly reduce the risk of fertilizer burn. Because nutrients are released gradually, the concentration of salts in the soil solution stays within safe levels even if you slightly overapply. This margin of safety is especially valuable for less experienced gardeners.

Second, slow-release products reduce nutrient waste. Quick-release nitrogen can leach below the root zone during heavy rain or irrigation, reaching groundwater and contributing to pollution. Slow-release nitrogen stays in the root zone longer, giving plants more opportunity to absorb it before it moves deeper into the soil profile.

Third, fewer applications are needed. A single application of a quality slow-release fertilizer can feed a lawn for 8 to 12 weeks, compared to 4 to 6 weeks for a quick-release product. This saves time, labor, and often money despite the higher per-bag cost.

Fourth, slow-release fertilizers promote more even, consistent growth. Quick-release products often produce a surge of growth followed by a decline, creating the feast-or-famine cycle. Slow-release products maintain steady nutrient levels that support uniform growth throughout the feeding period.

The primary disadvantage is cost. Slow-release fertilizers typically cost 50 to 100 percent more per bag than comparable quick-release products. However, because fewer applications are needed and there is less nutrient waste, the total seasonal cost may be comparable.

Another limitation is slower initial response. If you need to green up a lawn quickly for an event or address an acute nutrient deficiency, a quick-release product will deliver faster visible results. Many premium lawn fertilizers blend both types, providing some immediate nutrition with sustained feeding.

When shopping for slow-release fertilizer, look at the guaranteed analysis label for the percentage of slow-release nitrogen, sometimes listed as water-insoluble nitrogen (WIN) or controlled-release nitrogen. Quality lawn fertilizers typically contain 30 to 50 percent or more of their nitrogen in slow-release form.
