What Is the Difference Between Manure and Fertilizer?
Manure is animal waste used as an organic soil amendment that provides low-concentration nutrients plus organic matter, while fertilizer is a manufactured or processed product delivering precise, concentrated nutrient ratios. Manure improves soil biology and structure over time but has variable nutrient content and requires composting before use. Fertilizer offers predictable NPK ratios for targeted feeding. Manure and fertilizer are both used to nourish plants, but they differ significantly in composition, nutrient delivery, application methods, and effects on soil health.
Manure is animal waste, typically from cattle, horses, chickens, sheep, or rabbits. It contains a mix of feces, urine, and often bedding materials like straw or wood shavings. As a natural byproduct of animal agriculture, manure has been used to enrich soil for thousands of years.
The nutrient content of manure varies widely depending on the animal source, diet, age, and how the manure has been stored and processed. Chicken manure is among the richest, typically containing around 3-4 percent nitrogen, 2-3 percent phosphorus, and 1-2 percent potassium. Cow manure is milder at roughly 0.5-1 percent nitrogen. Horse manure falls somewhere in between.
Fertilizer, whether synthetic or organic, is processed to deliver specific, consistent nutrient concentrations. When you purchase a bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer, you know exactly what you are getting. This precision allows gardeners to target specific nutrient deficiencies and calculate exact application rates.
One critical consideration with manure is the need for proper composting. Fresh manure can burn plants due to high ammonia content, introduce weed seeds into your garden, and potentially harbor harmful pathogens like E. coli or Salmonella. Composted manure, which has been aged for at least three to six months at temperatures above 130 degrees Fahrenheit, is safer and more stable.
The USDA National Organic Program requires that raw manure be incorporated into soil at least 120 days before harvesting crops where the edible portion contacts the soil surface, and at least 90 days for crops that do not contact the soil. These guidelines protect against foodborne illness.
Manure offers benefits that synthetic fertilizer cannot replicate. It adds significant organic matter to soil, improving structure, water-holding capacity, and drainage. It feeds beneficial soil microorganisms that help break down nutrients into plant-available forms. Over years of application, manure builds a rich, living soil ecosystem that supports robust plant growth.
However, manure has drawbacks. Its variable nutrient content makes precise application difficult. Excessive manure application, particularly from poultry sources, can lead to phosphorus overload in soil, which contributes to water pollution when phosphorus runs off into streams and lakes. Manure can also contain residual herbicides that passed through the animal's digestive system and can damage sensitive garden plants like tomatoes and beans.
For most home gardeners, the ideal approach combines both products. Use well-composted manure as a soil builder applied annually in fall or early spring at rates of one to two inches spread over the garden surface and tilled in. Supplement with targeted fertilizer applications based on soil test results to address any remaining nutrient gaps.
Always source manure from known, reliable providers. Ask whether the animals were fed hay treated with persistent herbicides like aminopyralid or clopyralid, which can survive composting and damage broadleaf garden plants for years.
