The most common cause is simple over-application. This happens when you apply more product than the label recommends, make overlapping passes with your spreader, or spill fertilizer while filling the hopper. Even a small excess can cause browning, particularly with concentrated synthetic products. Spreader calibration issues are a frequent culprit. If your spreader setting is too high, you may be applying double or triple the intended rate without realizing it.
Applying fertilizer to dry soil or dry grass blades significantly increases the risk of browning. When soil is dry, there is less water available to dilute the fertilizer salts as they dissolve. This creates a concentrated salt solution around the roots that overwhelms their ability to absorb water. The result is dehydration and browning even though nutrients are available. Always water your lawn thoroughly one to two days before fertilizing and again immediately after.
Hot weather application is another frequent mistake. When air temperatures exceed 85 degrees Fahrenheit, grass is already under heat stress and transpiring heavily. Adding fertilizer salt stress on top of heat stress can push grass over the edge into browning. Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass are particularly vulnerable to summer fertilizer burn because they are already struggling in warm temperatures.
The type of fertilizer matters considerably. Fast-release nitrogen sources like urea, ammonium nitrate, and ammonium sulfate dissolve quickly and can spike salt concentrations rapidly. Slow-release formulations coated with sulfur or polymer release nutrients gradually over weeks, making burn much less likely even with minor over-application.
Uneven application creates a distinctive pattern that helps diagnosis. Brown or yellow streaks that follow your mowing or spreader pattern clearly indicate fertilizer burn rather than disease or drought. If you see sharp lines between green and brown areas that correspond to where you walked with the spreader, the cause is application overlap.
Less commonly, browning can occur if you fertilize grass that is dormant or semi-dormant. Dormant grass cannot metabolize nutrients, so the fertilizer sits unused in the soil, building up salt concentrations. Warm-season grasses should not be fertilized when they are winter dormant, and cool-season grasses should not be fertilized during summer dormancy.
To fix the current browning, begin deep watering immediately. Apply one inch of water daily for seven days to leach excess salts below the root zone. Remove any visible fertilizer granules from the lawn surface. Do not mow until you see new green growth, and when you do mow, raise the blade height. Do not apply any additional fertilizer for at least six weeks.
