The killing mechanism is straightforward chemistry. All fertilizers, whether synthetic or organic, introduce mineral salts into the soil. In normal concentrations, these salts create a solution that allows roots to absorb water and dissolved nutrients through osmosis. Water naturally flows from areas of low salt concentration to areas of high salt concentration across cell membranes. Under normal conditions, the salt concentration inside root cells is higher than the surrounding soil solution, so water flows into the roots.
When you add too much fertilizer, the salt concentration in the soil solution exceeds the concentration inside the root cells. This reverses the osmotic flow. Water moves out of the roots and into the soil, dehydrating the plant from its most critical organ system. Root cells lose turgor pressure, collapse, and die. Without functional roots, the plant cannot absorb water regardless of how much is available in the soil, leading to rapid wilting and death.

Excessive nitrogen specifically causes problems beyond salt stress. Very high nitrogen levels stimulate rapid, succulent top growth that is attractive to aphids and other sap-feeding insects. The soft, fast-growing tissue is also more susceptible to fungal diseases. In fruiting plants, excess nitrogen promotes vegetative growth at the expense of flowers and fruit, reducing harvest yields.
Excess phosphorus can interfere with the absorption of iron, zinc, and manganese, causing micronutrient deficiencies even when those elements are present in the soil. This is why balanced fertilization based on soil test results is so important.
To avoid killing your plants with fertilizer, always start with a soil test to determine actual nutrient needs.
