These are the three primary macronutrients that all plants need in the largest quantities. What Each Nutrient Does

Phosphorus supports root development, flowering, and fruiting. Without enough phosphorus, seedlings stay stunted and flowering plants produce fewer blooms. Phosphorus-deficient plants often develop dark purple coloring on their stems and leaf undersides.

Potassium strengthens cell walls and regulates water movement within the plant. It builds disease resistance and cold hardiness. Potassium-deficient plants show brown, scorched leaf edges starting on the oldest leaves.

How to Read NPK Numbers on a Label

The three numbers on every fertilizer bag (such as 10-10-10 or 24-8-16) represent the percentage by weight of N, P, and K in that order. A 50-lb bag of 10-10-10 contains 5 lbs nitrogen, 5 lbs phosphorus, and 5 lbs potassium. The remaining weight is filler material that helps distribute the nutrients evenly.

Common NPK Ratios and Their Uses

High nitrogen (24-8-16, 32-0-4): lawns and leafy vegetables. High phosphorus (10-30-20, 15-30-15): flowering plants and root crops. High potassium (0-0-50, 6-12-18): fruit production and winter hardening. Balanced (10-10-10, 16-16-16): general purpose when a soil test is not available.
